Graham Bligh

Once a week, I have an early coffee with my old friend Graham Bligh, former principal of BVN Architecture. At 91, Graham continues to inspire me with his endless curiosity and artistic output. Our conversations are wide-ranging, and I constantly gain a clearer perspective about my work from his wisdom.

Graham is also very patient; I always draw him whenever we meet.

This week, he told me of the most impressive architectural talk he had ever witnessed, given by Alexis Sanal Murat Şanal of ŞANALarc in Brisbane many years ago. It was so memorable because they did not show one image of one of their works. Instead, they focused on people, movement and gathering.

It struck me as relevant to my work and my marketing of that work. It is not about what I have done or how good I am at it; it is really about the people I interact with, what they get out of, or how they are moved by the gatherings I present at.

A timely reminder for me. Thanks, GB.
