This sketch is inspired by a painting of the same name I did in 1998 as a lucky door prize for a Black Tie Fundraiser for MS called Chopsticks, Fortunes and Fish.
I had been thinking about the piece for ages and procrastinated right up until the invitation deadline.
By necessity, it came out of nowhere, but I had a rare sense of flow as I was just watched my brush move quickly across the canvas without really directing it.
I was quite attached to it due to the process and, unbelievably, on the night, I won the lucky door prize. Reluctantly, and under pressure, I allowed for a redraw.
Later that evening, the fortunate and heavily fortified owner of MY painting sought me out to how much he really loved, really loved, no man you got to understand, really loved that painting.
Sadly, fortune was not with me that night, and as he turned away, he knocked my glass and spilt the entire glass of red wine down the front of my dress shirt! As he walked away, totally oblivious to his adding injury to my loss of those red dashes of paint on canvas, I forever had a memento in the splash of red wine on my shirt. And now I have a little rendition as well!
